In anticipation of an upcoming on-campus talk by conservative icon Ann Coulter, University of California, Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ mass-emailed every student on campus and told them to come out and protest the event.
According to reports, Christ – it’s admittedly difficult to refer to her using this otherwise sacred name… – instructed all UC Berkeley students to stir up a ruckus in and around the building where Coulter, along with others from Turning Point USA, were set to have a peaceful dialogue and panel discussion about some of the pressing issues of our day.
“Hatred is antithetical to belonging, to respect, to understanding, and to learning itself,” Christ wrote in her carefully worded email, which also prompted those who agreed with it to make their presence known with protest signage, foul language, and a level of chaos so unruly that law enforcement in SWAT-type gear had to form a sizeable barricade.
“We must defend our commitment to diversity and inclusion by remaining united in our condemnation of abhorrent ideologies that promote hatred on the basis of an individual’s origins or identity.”
As part of UC Berkeley’s “United Against Hate” week, which just so happened to coincide with Coulter’s on-campus appearance, Christ’s call for civil unrest was just one of many similar calls for students to show up and cause trouble at various conservative-leaning events on campus – because nothing says “diversity” and “inclusion” more loudly than anti-free speech oppression.
Responding to Christ’s outlandish email, UC Berkeley College Republicans Vice President Rudra Reddy issued a public condemnation, noting that Christ’s use of the word “hate” to describe the Coulter event was nothing short of inappropriate and immature.
“The real danger is members of the community using nebulous terms like ‘hate’ to encompass mainstream conservative positions, including placing restrictions on immigration in the national interest, and then arguing for the censorship of those points of view in the interest of public safety,” Reddy is quoted as telling the campus newspaper.
“It is also a very convenient coincidence that these rallies should fall on the week we are hosting Ann Coulter. Regardless, we are undeterred and the event will go on as scheduled.”
Video footage of what took place outside the event, which was uploaded to Twitter after the fact, depicts angry leftists screaming and hollering vulgarities at passersby, police, and of course attendees of the Coulter talk. This footage is too inappropriate to post here, but is available for those wanting to view it at the Left Coast Right Watch Twitter page.
In Christ’s defense, UC Berkeley Assistant Vice Chancellor of Public Affairs Dan Mogulof told Campus Reform that Christ was merely endorsing the entirety of the school’s “United Against Hate Week,” which also included an “Islamophobia Awareness Workshop” at the local city hall, as well as a “Candlelight Vigil for Lives Lost to Transgender Violence.”
“The Chancellor’s message was an endorsement of the overall effort, not of any particular event,” Mogulof contended, adding that Christ “did not review the event list” before blasting out her campus-wide email.
“If the Chancellor had wanted to specifically support, promote, or endorse any of the individual events, she would have done so,” he added in a statement. “The Chancellor’s stance against hatred has nothing to do with, and is not impacted by, the perspectives or beliefs of those who are targeted.”
Reddy, however, expressed skepticism about Christ’s supposedly “neutral” stance on the matter, telling Campus Reform that “nobody in BCR (Berkeley College Republicans) or in the broader conservative movement believes in ‘hating’ any individual on the basis of their immutable characteristics.”
